Gay weddings in Barcelona make it the “marriage tourism” capital of the world |

Homosexuals around the world are registering for residency in the city, to marry.
The civil registry marries an average of one foreign gay couple a week.
… this is just an example of the phenomena occurring in this Catalonian capital: Gay marriage tourism.
At Barcelona’s civil registrar, an average of one of these ceremonies occurs a week, where two of the newlyweds are of the same sex, foreigners travelling to Catalonia to say “I do.” In their country, these marriages are not legal. So while in their own place of residency the papers are purely symbolic, in their minds they are legally married. Of course, this is only under Spanish law.
Last year there were 318 civil marriage registrations between people of the same sex in the capital of Catalonia, of these marriages, 267 were between men, and 51 between women. The 318 ceremonies make up a little more than 6% of the total 5063 civil marriage registrations in 2006.

 The event gave us plenty to talk about for some time in San Jorge, A Coruña.
Marcela Gracia Ibeas and Elisa Sánchez were married in 1901 in front of the San Jorge parish priest, father Cortiella. They first met in their school days.
While both lived in the same town and worked as teachers, they become lovers. To be able to marry, Elisa reinvented herself as Mario, falsifying her complete past.
Once the trick was uncovered, they were the town’s laughing stock, persecuted and Mario was discriminated at work. They decided that their only choice was to move to Argentina.
Rumour has it that Marcela remarried in Argentina after Mario had deceased.
